STARTING A YAHOO CLUB

So you want to start a "Message Board" Club on Yahoo!
All you need in your internet connection, your browser and a little creativity

SIGNING UP AS A YAHOO! MEMBER

To start, if you're not already, you've got to be signed up for Yahoo!Clubs.

Browse on over to
( or start at http://www.yahoo.com and hit the "Clubs" link found a little under the search box)

If you're already a Club member, just enter your Yahoo! ID and Password to enter the clubs area.
If you're new just click the "Sign me up" link under the New User sign.

Now just fill in the form, selecting a name for your Yahoo ID
(you'll use this name in your clubs so pick one you'll like to stick with for a while), a password you'll remember (jot it down, you can't get back without it), and answer any of the other boxes you want (most are optional)
That's all there is!!!!

CREATING YOUR CLUB

Now you're a member, get back to the Clubs page (http://clubs.yahoo.com). Keeping in mind what kind of club you'd like to create, browse through the club listings under "Find A Club" until you find an appropriate category.

For Scout related clubs, you might find "Recreation & Sports" => "Outdoors" => "Scouts" an appropriate area.

Now just hit the "CREATE A CLUB" button near the upper right corner. You might be asked for your Yahoo! Id and Password at this point, enter it if you are. (you can also wait until now to sign up for a Yahoo ID, but I'd recommend you do that before you try creating a club)

You can click a box to tell your computer to remember you ID and Password for next time. If you're the only one using the computer this can be a great timesaver, but if others (like your brother, sister or parent) also use your computer, I'd suggest you leave this box unchecked and enter your password yourself each time.

Next, just check that it's really you creating the club, and that the club is in the category you want it in. If not hit your browser's "Back" arrow and try it again.

Now for the fun part. Name your club, enter your zip code (to let others know where the club's located), and decide if the club is to be "Listed" or "Unlisted". If you're "Listed", then your club will be included in the Yahoo! Club directory and others people, invited or not, will be able to read your messages. If you're
"Unlisted" then only "invited" members will be able to join and read your pages. This is the safest way to have a club. Choose carefully, you can't change your mind later and keep the same name of the club. If you're not sure either choose "Unlisted" to be safe, or talk it over with your parents or scout leaders.

Now, hit the "YES I ACCEPT" button ….. and you're the proud owner of a Yahoo! Club.

GETTING YOUR CLUB STARTED

At this point you have four options:

1 Invite your friends to join your club ("Invite friends" button)
Just enter each friend's email address ( or Yahoo ID if you know it)
Send him a quick message to let him know what it's all about
Push the "SEND" button, and he's invited

2 Start making your club a cool place ("Fix it up" button)
Just enter a few things to make your club look like it belongs to you!
"Describe Your Club" this 8 word message will be put right below your club name
"Founder's Message" this is for you to say a few words about your club and why you created it
"Your Home Page Address" this can be your own web page, or the page of your club (if it has one).
"Picture URL" this is a small picture that will be shown on your page. Note: you can't upload it here, only put a link to a picture that's already somewhere on the web.

3 Take a look at your new club ("Let me see it" button)
As it says, hit this button and you're in the middle of your new club
After entering your club, you can "Fix it up" or "Invite Friends" by hitting the "Edit Settings", "Change Picture" or "Invite" links in the left hand menu bar.

4 forget about it and go browsing elsewhere (not really an option but I thought I'd see if you were really reading this)

That's all it takes. You're ready to have fun with your Message Board Club. I suggest you right away post a big greeting to your new members, and after your invitees start arriving, post an individual greeting right away to make them feel comfortable with your club. The more comfortable they feel, the more they'll feel like coming back, and that's what it's all about. Have fun, joke around and you'll create a great club.
